A UNIQUE SITUATION Laurentian Academy is in a unique and privileged situation. It shares its campus and facilities with EDPHY, and organisation which has been welcoming youth from 6 to 17 years of age for linguistic stays and outdoor activities (varying from 2 days to several weeks), since 1965. During the school year, this means that students of Laurentian Academy are able to live on campus with youth from different races and cultures. Each year, the school has visitors from China, Japan, Germany, Australia, Panama, France, Morocco, Columbia and Mexico.... There is thus an exceptional opportunity for our students to experience the "Global Awareness" segment of our Educational Project, something which is unique to our school. |

CULTURAL
PROGRAM Each year, a cultural programme is carried out with the financial assistance of a group of sponsors, donors and friends, working through Laurentian Academys Private Foundation. Our main objective at Laurentian Academy is to give students a wider cultural exposure aimed at contributing to their cultural development. This season also contributes to encourage the participation of parents in such activities by having them attend, with their families and friends, the different events on the calendar and also encourage teachers to provide adequate preparation for their students, prior to these activities, so that they may gain the maximum advantage from the cultural program. Finally, this cultural season develops a degree of participation on the part of the regional population. |
||
| Each year our program features: a visit to the Montreal Book Fair, an International Fiesta , a show featuring dancing and singing with our students, a presentation of the best-loved Christmas carols by a famous group ''Les Voix Boréales'', plays performed by our students of primary and secondary levels, and finally the Awards Evening , an evening for the awarding of honours to students who have had a year of exceptional performance. | |||

CULTURAL TRIPS The annual cultural trips abroad or within Canada are an essential part of Laurentian Academys attempts to achieve the goal of opening up the world to its students and we strongly encourage parents to enrol their children. The trips for the students at the primary level as well as Secondary 1 and 2 always take place at the end of the school year in the month of June and the trip for the Secondary 3, 4 and 5 during the Winter Break. The destinations are as follows (alternately):

The cost of the trip includes transport, accommodation (if possible this will be in an internationally recognised youth centre or hostel, or a student residence), all visits, administration fees and accompaniment (by teacher/chaperones). For younger students, the chaperone/student ratio will be 1 to 10, while for Secondary students it will be 1 to 15. The approach taken is one favouring an educational trip more than a purely touristic one, while putting the emphasis on discovering different cultures. |

STUDY PERIODS Laurentian Academy has two types of study periods: Every afternoon, students profit from a one-hour study period in which they can work by doing their homework or producing reports. These study periods are always supervised by teachers. In the evenings, boarding students have a further hour of supervised study. They receive any help they may require to do their homework. Those students who show signs of leadership and are stronger in the different academic subjects, are called upon to support and assist those who are experiencing difficulties or who do not fully understand the work and problems arising in the different disciplines. Our objective is the acquiring of autonomy by our students ; we encourage them to learn to study either individually or as part of a team. |
SCHEDULE At Laurentian Academy, the school day is certainly longer than in other schools as the day starts at 8 :10 a.m. and ends at 5 :00 p.m. Instead of five hours of daily tuition, this program, which is compulsory for all those enrolled (whether as day students or boarders), has been increased to two hours per day. This allows for a minimum of one hour of supervised study and a further hour for practising any one of a multitude of sports, cultural, artistic, linguistic, community-oriented or leadership activities. The participation of all students is obligatory and activities are supervised according to a precise schedule in conformity with the choices exercised by the students themselves. |

SPECIAL REVISION CLASSES At Laurentian
Academy, more time is allowed for the teaching of French, Maths and
English than is prescribed by the MEQ (between 10 and 80 hours, depending
on the level). This surplus means that we are able to do planned revision
within the normal schedule. However, Laurentian Academy also offers the possibility, during the school year, of organising small groups, or even private individual lessons, should extra revision prove necessary. These classes will be directed by a teacher specialised in the subject matter. The costs related to these courses are the responsibility of the parents. The teaching staff may make it obligatory for a student to follow an extra course in one of the principal subjects. |
INTEGRATION CAMP With the ultimate aim of making sure all our new students get a good start , we organise in the spring time an integration camp. This camp is organise to help your child discover the depth of the schools Educational Project, while enjoying a number of different activities. It is a useful moment for becoming familiar with the different areas of the school, as well as the buildings and equipment to be used during the school year. Through meetings with the Headmaster, teachers and boarding house staff, the student can obtain precise information concerning schedules, homework, examinations, the school calendar and term dates. Knowing the hopes that you have founded in your child, we are certain that you will encourage him to participate in this session.
