Physical Education

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Any institution intending to make a serious contribution to the integrated development of a child, must accord a high degree of importance to its physical development. This is the reason for which   Laurentian Academy offers its students a physical education programme that is as highly developed in quality as it is in quantity.

The main objective is to favour the development of    basic physical qualities, underlining the importance of athletic skills as well as learning and perfecting sports that may then be practised during an entire lifetime such as skiing, equitation, tennis, swimming, and canoeing.

SPORTS STUDIES

Depending on the child’s growth curve, at the physiological level, and at a specific age, it is appropriate to work on such qualities as dexterity, balance, agility, speed, strength, resistance and endurance.

Depending on the seasons and the program appropriate to each age level, students are initiated by competent educators and trainers to an impressive list of sports within the regular physical education programme and this, in an exceptional site. Two of the activities which are particularly noteworthy are the downhill skiing or snow-boarding program, which takes place over 10 weeks in January, February and March, and an initiation to the art of horseback-riding (western) in the spring.

Students’ participation is compulsory in two team sports in conformity with the choices that have been made by them. They will have to participate in intramural games according to a well-defined schedule. The champions in each sport will receive trophies and medals.

SKI

The ski program is compulsory for all students and includes  downhill skiing or snowboarding. Courses take place on two half-day per week over a predetermined period of 10 weeks.

It is equally important to note that a student may be excluded from the ski programme if his or her results or work are judged to be unsatisfactory. In September, parents are notified about the ski station to be used, the payment methods available and any advantages which can be procured at the station by the families themselves. The fees for this activity are included in the section relating to Complementary Services.

INTRAMURAL AND INTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

An intramural program exists, involving a dozen or so teams in all sorts of sports activities. The most talented athletes will have the opportunity to develop their skills by participating in inter-school competitions. This program includes:

  • Individual sports (self-defence, badminton, canoeing, circus, cross country, equitation,  , obstacle course, judo, weight-lifting, swimming);
  • Team sports (baseball, basketball, handball, floor hockey, volleyball, soccer, touch football);
  • Socio-cultural activities (counsellor-in-training/leadership, student cantine,  internet, improvisation league, theatre) .

Students of  Laurentian Academy are periodically invited to enrol for activities according to the season and availability of facilities. Student participation is compulsory and activities take place according to a well-defined schedule in conformity with the choices that have been made. This program is divided  into four parts : guided after-school activities, evening activities, inter-school activities, specialised sports options.
