Our Institution

A BRIEF HISTORY

The origins of Laurentian Academy go back to 1965. In the beginning, it was a centre specialising in physical education and outdoor activities, the first of its kind in Canada. Its name was EDPHY, a diminutive for physical education (in French) ; later it became EDPHY OUTDOOR CENTER, to take into account its growth as an international institution welcoming youth from over 40 countries.

Twenty years further on,   Laurentian Academy was founded by Mr. Yvan Dubois who has been accorded the highest distinction awarded to citizens of this country, the ORDER OF Canada, for his numerous initiatives as a physical educator and recreationist, in the field of youth, recreation and sports. Today   Laurentian Academy is well established and widely known throughout the world of education. In this respect, since 1965, more than a 350,000 young people between the ages of 6 to 17, from all five continents, have frequented our campus. Hundreds of letters of reference have been sent over the years by both parents and children, to show their appreciation. Our Reference Guide contains a sample of references from well-known personalities in Canada (Mr. Bill Warren, president of the Canadian Olympic Association, Mr. Bernard Landry, Ex-Prime Minister of Quebec,  etc...)

Laurentian Academy is a private school, with a  co-ed student population at the Elementary and Secondary school levels, with facilities for both day students and boarders. Our philosophy is to create an environment in which young people can learn to become better citizens of the world ( and possibly its future leaders). This is to be accomplished by influencing not only their knowledge of the world, but also their health, culture, language ability, sports, as well as their understanding and vision of the world as a whole. Thus the Academy’s mission : to offer youth from around the world an Educational Project favouring each student’s overall development.

Since 1965 and with ongoing research and continual development, allied to a profound, underlying interest in education itself, allows us to offer a unique educational concept, spread over 3 major programmes :

• The Academic Year in French
• The Academic Year in English
• The Second Language Studies Programme

We are proud to say that we allow   no compromise in proclaiming our distinctive character as a House of Learning aimed at ensuring the future success of your children’s education

LOCATION, CAMPUS AND FACILITIES

Laurentian Academy is nestled in the mountain village of Val-Morin just 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Montreal, Quebec CANADA.  Built on the shore of a lake fed by the North River, the school, with its magnificent sports and recreation facilities, is surrounded by 590 forested acres.

Students also have ample opportunity to use the easily accessible Linear Parkway, a 200 km-long trail organised for cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing.

Separate pavilions are allocated to the Elementary and Secondary school students. The quarters for boarders  are comfortably laid out, adapted to the age of their residents, and have private bathrooms. In general, for boarders at the Secondary level, rooms are shared by three to four students.

All accommodations are protected by a fire safety system linked to a central control centre.

The pool, gymnastics hall, exercise room, tennis courts/double gymnasium,  judo hall are used for physical education courses and after-school activities and recreation. Outside are two pools, a circus big top, a theatre and a network of trails for jogging, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and explorations of an ecological nature, as well as an obstacle course. Areas are set aside for the practice of games and sports such as archery, baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball and handball, making the range of activities available very wide indeed. The lake with its nearby access to the North River, allows for some excellent canoeing. Lastly, during the summer months, the equestrian centre has 12 horses, 2 practice rings and a bridle path, while the ski resorts are a five minute driving distance for the 10 week yearly downhill and snowboarding school programmes.
